School starts in just a few days. You would think that the impending deadline would be sufficient motivation for Aaron and I to work like crazy people on our start-of-the-year lists.
Unfortunately, you would be wrong.
Apparently, when faced with the thought of school, we turn our attention instead to our house. Granted, we have both spent time in our classrooms this week, and we have both spent time at home preparing for the school year. But if I had to summarize this week, it would be the week of the house. If I had been on top of it enough to take some before-and-after photos, the place would be in many cases unrecognizable compared to how it looked through the second semester of last school year. While we still have many boxes to go through, they are mostly of the "childhood memories/old college stuff" sort. Everything is contained in tubs, and so we can easily go through a tub or two at a time as the opportunity arises. And if all those tubs stay just where they are until next summer, we'd be ok with that, too.
I don't think it's all bad to have devoted so much time to the house this week. Even though it was not direct classroom prep, the fact that our home is significantly more organized will have a direct positive impact on our teaching year. Instead of coming home to piles and piles of boxes, struggling to find where things are located, we can come home to a place that is just... home. Sure, there will always be things to clean, the desk will not always be this tidy, the clothes will not always be neatly put away, but we will no longer open the door tentatively, fearing that the boxes may have taken over the house while we were gone!
